Learn the skills to work effectively in a variety of community/social care settings.

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to work effectively in a variety of community/social care settings, where frequent demand is made on the individual to relate to people at various levels of personal development. The module aims to introduce the learner to human growth and development from infancy to old age in order that the learner will be equipped to relate to people at a level appropriate to their needs.

To be eligible to sit this course you must be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This means that learners must have experience in healthcare, homecare or family care and as such must be deemed competent in a range of learning outcomes. After purchasing, an eligibility form will be emailed to you which must be completed and submitted to confirm your eligibility. *If you don’t meet the requirements you will be refunded your course fee.

On course completion learner will be able to:

  1. Understand the concept of human growth and development from conception to old age
  2. Understand normal patterns of development from infancy to old age with reference to physical, emotional, social and intellectual development
  3. Recognise variations within the normal range of human growth and development and understand factors that can effect development throughout the lifespan
  4. Develop interpersonal/interactive skills appropriate to responding to the needs of others
  5. Apply skills/knowledge to typical work-based problems
  6. Explore own personal prejudices, fears and anxieties about working with people in need of care
  7. Develop self-confidence and empathy in dealing with people
  8. Demonstrate the ability to identify a range of individual needs and apply the interpersonal skills and strategies required to meet these needs in a range of settings

All learning outcomes must be assessed:

  • Assignment 60% – An assignment is an exercise carried out in response to a brief with specific guidelines as to what should be included. An assignment is usually of short duration and may be carried out over a specified period of time. There are two assignments at 30% each.
  • Examination – Theory 40% – An examination provides a means of assessing a learner’s ability to recall and apply knowledge, skills and understanding within a set period of time and under clearly specified conditions. A theory-based examination assesses the ability to recall, apply and understand specific theory and knowledge


  • Pass 50% – 64%
  • Merit 65% – 79%
  • Distinction 80% – 100%

Successful completion of this component award enables the learner to transfer to programmes leading to other certificates where this component is a mandatory or an elective requirement.
